To be eligible for consideration in the 40 under 40 Class of 2024, nominees must be under the age of 40 on the September 15, 2024.

By entering a nomination or confirming the nomination, entrants accept and agree to abide by the rules and the decisions of the organisers and selectors with respect to all aspects of the scheme.

Entries are subject to verification by the 40 under 40 organisers. In the event it is determined that an entrant has entered in a manner deemed by the organisers to be against the interests of the scheme, or if it is determined that the nomination or nominee submission forms misrepresent the candidate’s achievements in any way, the entrant will be disqualified.

All the material submitted – including information and photographs – should be copyright-free – and you agree to its dissemination in print and online.

What is the age requirement for 40 under 40 candidates?
To be eligible for consideration in the 40 under 40 2024, nominees must be under the age of 40 on September 15, 2024.

Do they have to be a lighting designer?
No, but they need to be working in a creative capacity with the application of lighting in architecture. Other possible roles apart from lighting designer could include for example architect, architectural technician,engineer, light artist, luminaire designer and interior designer.

How do I nominate someone for 40 under 40?
To nominate someone click the ‘nominate’ tab in the menu bar above, from this page you will be directed to the 40 under 40 submission online platform. As a nominator you require your nominee’s name, job title, phone number, e-mail address and an explanation as to why you think they are a suitable candidate for 40 under 40 2024.

Whats the deadline for nominating someone?
There is no actual deadline for nominating but please allow them time to complete their submission before the closing of entries on November 17th, 2024.

Who can nominate a candidate?
Anyone can nominate a candidate who they feel is eligible for 40 under 40 status. This could be a practice principal, director, associate, colleague, tutor, head of department, client or friend. You will need cite why they, in your opinion, are an exceptional candidate.

Can I nominate myself?
No. We ask for a separate nominator. This could from one of the above roles. However, nominees will be approached to elaborate on and provide evidence of their achievements.

Can I nominate more than one person?
You can nominate as many people as you’d like. And you can nominate employees, interns, freelancers, colleagues and friends.

Can I nominate a group or a pair of people as co-nominees?
Yes. We know that many people’s success is as part of a team. However, the intention of the 40 under 40 is to recognise the outstanding work of individuals, so typically groups of two or three are the most likely to make it through our process. For example, two people who have started and run a practice together. In order for each candidate to be eligible we must receive a separate submission nomination entry with contact information for each.

Will the nominees be told who nominated them?
Yes. The nominees will be told that they were nominated and that they need to fill out an additional online form to complete the nomination.

What makes someone a good candidate for 40 under 40?
Candidates should be passionate about lighting and display exceptional talent and potential, and have demonstrable achievements in the field.

Does being nominated multiple times help my nominee?
No. The selectors look mainly at the submission and associated evidence from the nominees themselves. While you may want to ensure that your nominee was considered and nominated, it won’t make a difference. 

Is there any geographic restrictions?
No, candidates can be located anywhere in the world.

I nominated someone last year and they weren’t selected. Can I nominate them again?
Absolutely. There are a number of reasons nominees might not get selected including that the selectors consider their achievements not yet proven. An additional year may have made them better candidates.

I received an e-mail saying I was nominated, what do I do now?
Congratulations, someone has nominated you for the 40 under 40 class of 2024. There is a two-step nomination process to follow. To accept the nomination you must fill out the online nominee form by no later than 17th November 2024. The form includes questions about your design work, projects you have worked on, career achievements, educational accomplishments including research and papers. It also asks for references. The e-mail you received telling you that you were nominated includes a link to the nominee form.

Why do I have to complete the nomination if I was already nominated?
Nominators won’t always have the full information about candidates. Therefore we go to the individual candidates themselves and ask them to tell us themselves what they’ve done. Your nomination is judged mainly on what you put in this form — the information you provide and how clear it is.

What will happen if I don’t complete the nomination form?
If you have been nominated but you do not complete the nominee form you will not be eligible for the 40 under 40 and your information will not be sent to the selectors for consideration.

I’ve already been featured as the 40 under 40, can I be nominated again? 
No - we have decided that this is no longer to be included in order to give others a fair chance of being selected.

How are the 40 under 40 selected?
A selection panel will convene between December 2024 and January 2025 to assess all the nominees. This gathering debates the merits of the candidates, weighing their achievements until they find forty candidates for the year.

What are the selectors looking for?
The selection panel looks for nominees who have specific achievements in the application of lighting in architecture. Therefore try to be as specific as possible when you are filling out the nomination or nominee online form. Measurable achievements should be included and could include achievements such as contribution to successful projects, awards from professional associations or other groups or educational achievement. We know that many achievements aren’t easily quantified or acknowledged, so therefore give us as much detail as you can. The judges will also look for evidence of the nominee’s passion for the craft of lighting.

Who are the selectors?
The 2024 selectors will be announced shortly.

When will I find out if I have been selected the 40 under 40?
Those who are selected for this year’s 40 under 40 will be contacted during January 2025.

What happens next?
Candidates will be invited to participate in an online celebratory event and also receive their Golden Ticket.

Will I get a trophy?

No. We have changed this in order to create a more sustainable award program. Successful candidates will be awarded with a certificate for their tree planted in the Fillix Olive Grove.
